Why Apprentices are good for business

More and more employers are seeing Apprenticeships as the way forward when it comes to recruitment. There are a number of reasons for this:

  • An Apprentice is dedicated and committed to their chosen profession which has a positive impact on the business.
  • Taking on Apprentices can help to reduce the recruitment, training and retention costs in the long term for your business.
  • As the employee is given the training and skills they need to do their job right, the company will benefit from greater productivity.
  • Employees will have more job satisfaction as they will feel valued as their professional development needs are being met.
  • Employees that have or are working towards an Apprenticeship have greater loyalty and will provide higher levels of quality in their work as they look to repay the investment made to up skill them.

So, What is an Apprenticeship?

It is a work based training programme that is designed to meet the needs of your business, and helps the Apprentice to obtain a nationally recognised qualification. An Apprenticeship can be offered to no only new recruits to the business, but also to existing members of staff. There are over 190 types of Apprenticeships suitable for almost every type of job, ranging from retail to engineering. The great news is the National Apprenticeship Service provides support in funding the trainings, and it is often free of charge.

The cost is lower than you think!

  • Apprentices aged between 16—18 government funding will cover the full cost of their training. If they are over 19 years of age you may need to make a contribution towards the training costs.
  • As an employer you will pay an Apprentice salary that is reflective of industry rates and experience. The minimum wage is £2.68 per hour, however you can choose to pay more.
  • You may be able to apply for an Apprenticeship Grant for Employers (AGE) valued up to £1,500 which is there to help small and medium sized businesses when they take on their first apprentice.
